Underplowing/Root pruning

Underplowing is a practice in which a ā€œUā€ shaped blade is passed under and along the sides of the plant, cutting a large percentage of the roots.  The result is a plant with a dense, compact root system that will transplant well and have a full, heavily branched top.
Fall planting and root pruning allows time for plant roots to start growing before winter.  The cooler nights, dew and fall rains reduce the amount of care a plant needs to get started.
